Plot
Lightning McQueen is racing with his long-time friends Bobby Swift and Cal Weathers, who are being outrun by a new generation of blazing-fast racers led by Jackson Storm. After a race in which Storm beats him easily, McQueen pushes himself too hard and suffers a violent crash that leaves him badly injured. Four months later, McQueen is recovering in Radiator Springs, where he watches footage of his late mentor Doc Hudson's crash and subsequent retirement. McQueen accepts an offer from Rusty and Dusty, the owners of his sponsor team Rust-eze, to be trained at a new state-of-the-art racing center.
At the center, McQueen meets his new trainer Cruz Ramirez, who assigns him various training exercises that he struggles with. He also learns that many of his old friends and rivals have retired or been fired by their sponsors to make way for the next-generation racers. Sterling, the new owner of Rust-eze, tells McQueen that he will retire him if he does not win his next race at the Florida 500. McQueen tries to use a high-tech racing simulator but causes severe damage to the equipment.
Convinced that he needs to train like Doc did, McQueen decides to travel across the country with Cruz to find Doc's mentor Smokey. On their way, they encounter several challenges and adventures that help them bond. They also race at Thunder Hollow Speedway against a group of demolition derby racers led by Miss Fritter. At the Florida International Speedway, McQueen starts last but gradually advances through the field until he reaches Storm's tail.
